Summary Description:
Provides the full range of occupational therapy evaluations and services to students with disabilities. Will develop and implement a program for facilitation, restoration, and/or maintenance of optimum independence in students with disabilities whose adaptive skills and/or effective functioning in the school environment have been impaired.
Qualifications:
- Must hold a Bachelor’s degree or Master's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited college or university.
- Have a valid National Board of Certification for Occupational Therapy, INC. (NVCOT) and the Virginia Board of Medicine. This includes passage of the national certification examination and ongoing active participation in continuing competency learning activities to obtain and maintain licensure to practice as issued by the Virginia Board of Medicine (See 18 VAC 85-80-10 et seq.).
- Current Virginia driver's license
- Annual registration with the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Had previous experience as an Occupational Therapist, particularly in a pediatric/youth setting preferred.
- Ability to gain the confidence and cooperation of students, teachers, and families.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with other professionals within the school and the community.
- Proficiency in the use of technology and data compilation, analysis, and reporting.
- Analytic ability and adaptability to changing needs.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to write comprehensive reports and interpret findings to families.
Essential Duties:
Essential duties are interpreted as being descriptive and not restrictive in nature. Other duties may be assigned.
- Work with students on the acquisition of or development of compensatory strategies for fine motor skills, sensory motor skills, visual motor skills, visual perceptual skills, and self-care skills.
- Thorough initial/ongoing evaluation and treatment planning, provide occupational therapy to students with a focus on skills needed for school participation utilizing task analysis and individually selected motor activities.
- Collaborate with team members to provide therapeutic interventions, environmental adaptations, and instructional modifications to support student achievement in the educational setting.
- Refine and develop professional skills through in-service training, professional reading, and mandatory continuing education.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information.
- Exchange professional information with peers through formal and informal means, and through mentoring of new therapists.
- Travel to assigned schools/facilities
- Make scheduling decisions for service delivery based on individual student and school needs.
- Consult with educational staff on specific program needs as appropriate.
- Respond to evaluation referrals for students with disabilities. Select appropriate evaluation tools, evaluate students, interpret findings, and report results.
- Assist the IEP team in determining the present level of performance/function and developing Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) goals and objectives.
- Maintain oral and written communication with educational personnel, parents, and community agencies regarding assigned schools and students. This can include, but is not limited to therapy session logs/notes, data collection, reports, telephone contact, and Medicaid documentation.
- Oversee implementation of therapeutic programs for students by educational personnel and student caregivers.
- Participate in the selection, design, and/or construction of necessary adaptive equipment.
- Consult with the principal and school staff concerning school-wide needs for specific psychological services and establish priorities for service delivery within assigned schools.
- Completes reports within timelines and provides other information as required for management purposes.
- Other duties may be assigned through the immediate supervisor.
Pay Rate:
Occupational Therapist Salary Scale (credit is based on years of full-time experience in a related position)
Contract: Full time / 10 months / 200 days
